Ecclesiastes 12:5

The Bible testifies that this body and world, where our souls dwell temporarily, will ultimately be destroyed.

When the house of dust—this body formed from the earth that temporarily houses our soul—collapses, each person’s soul will return, no longer to a temporary tent but to its eternal home.

Ecclesiastes 12:5
"They will be afraid of heights and dangers in the streets; the almond tree will blossom, the grasshopper will be a burden, and desire will fade. Then people go to their eternal home and mourners go about the streets."

So, where is the eternal home to which each of our souls will return?

People of this world who do not know God live as though this world is their only dwelling place, or even as if they will live here forever, caught up in a dangerous illusion.

Yet blessed is the one who knows the fate of their soul—more precious than anything in the world—and where their eternal home will be.

The Apostle Paul, knowing that his frail body of dust and this initial creation would one day fall, wrote with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit about the eternal home where his soul would live forever.

2 Corinthians 5:1-3
"For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked."

Take a moment now to ask yourself these questions and write your answers in a notebook:

Someday, this body of dust will certainly fall, and this world will perish. When that day and moment come, what will happen to my being and my soul?

After death, what will become of me, and what kind of world will await me?

Where, with whom, and how will I spend eternity?

Heavenly Father,
I reflect on the promises You have given us at this time, engraving them on my heart once again.

I look with the eyes of faith to the eternal house in heaven, a dwelling not made by human hands, which You have prepared.

I long for the day, the moment, when You will receive us into the blessed, eternal home of our Father, taking our souls from this earthly tent.

There, alongside the perfected people of God, together with the countless hosts of angels, we will forever rejoice in You, serve You with gratitude, and glorify You eternally—a blessed life I now anticipate with eyes of hope.

Father God, I pray at this time. You are the one who has given us a living hope in heaven.

Remember the promise You gave us, for You have given us hope.

Let this hope not put us to shame; through this hope, help us to endure and overcome the rough, barren journey of life on this earth. Keep our hope steadfast to the end.

Today, too, remember each precious soul redeemed by the blood of the Lord. Protect them from all the schemes of Satan, and fill them with overflowing grace and strength from heaven.
