The psalmist in Psalm 43 does not let go of the thread of faith and hope, even amidst the extreme suffering caused by the oppression of unjust enemies and the feeling as if God has forsaken him.
With firm confidence before God, he prays as follows:
Psalm 43:1-5
“Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly people; from the deceitful and unjust man deliver me! For you are the God in whom I take refuge;
why have you rejected me? Why do I go about mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? Send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling! Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy, and I will praise you with the lyre, O God, my God. Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”
Even in the midst of extreme suffering and tribulation, the psalmist does not despair.
Meditate on the heart of the psalmist, who holds on to faith and hope to the end and prays earnestly.
This is the dividing line where true believers are distinguished from those who are
not.
Although it may seem now as if God has abandoned him, the psalmist trusts in the guidance of light and truth.
Ultimately, he is confident that he will arrive at God’s holy hill, where he will stand before his God of exceeding joy, offering eternal praise.
The Bible teaches us that all Scripture is written for our instruction.
It is given so that, through endurance and the comfort of Scripture, we may have hope.
Engrave the words of Psalm 43 deeply on the tablet of your heart.
Whenever various forms of trials and adversity come upon you, chew over the Word inscribed in your heart.
From it, you will receive heavenly guidance and comfort, as well as new strength to lift weary hands and stand firm again.
A day of grace has begun.
Today, as you read, hear, and meditate on God’s Word, may your day be one where you, like the psalmist in Psalm 43, sing praises in faith and draw near to God even amidst extreme suffering.
I pray that you will live as a true believer, steadfast in faith and filled with hope.
In the name of the Lord, I bless you and bless you again! Amen!
