Hosea 10:12

“Sow righteousness for yourselves, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, until He comes and showers His righteousness on you.” (Hosea 10:12)

The central point to meditate upon in this verse is, "It is time to seek the Lord."

As Christians who live with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can understand the weight of this message through the Spirit’s illumination.

Now—

If we break up our hardened hearts, receive God’s word with humility, and repent, then His righteous and gracious rain will fall upon us. But if we miss this final opportunity for repentance, we will face God’s fearful judgment. This verse serves as a solemn warning for all believers who continue on wayward paths without turning back.

I feel my heart tremble as I record this meditation. This message may be meant for me, or it may apply to loved ones dear to my heart.

In our spiritual lives, we can sometimes lose the "first love" we had for God—the love for the gospel fulfilled through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and the deep affection for His church, bought with His blood. Over time, our hearts can grow numb and rigid, making us desensitized to God’s voice.

God calls us to break up this hardened ground, to renew our hearts and make them tender and responsive once again. This “breaking up” process goes beyond simply acknowledging our wrongs; it means uprooting unbelief and worldly thoughts at the deepest level of our hearts.

A Call to Each Person to Break Up Their Ground

The prophet Hosea urges us to break up the ground of our hearts and plant seeds of righteousness, receiving the Spirit’s conviction. God Himself is the One who seeks our well-being. In His perfect love, He desires our complete and eternal happiness and knows what is best for us.

God, who knows what truly benefits us, urges us to plow our hardened hearts and plant seeds of His word in faith and hope. On that final day, it will become clear what we have sown in our hearts, lives, and this world. And the fruits of what we have planted will be revealed before God, His heavenly people, and the hosts of angels.

Those who sow to the Spirit with reverent fear of this message will reap precious, heavenly fruits. They will receive praise, honor, authority, and rewards that the Father bestows on His children.

However, some children of God may face His stern rebuke if they lose this last opportunity for repentance.

“But you have planted wickedness, you have reaped evil, you have eaten the fruit of deception. Because you have depended on your own strength and on your many warriors.” (Hosea 10:13)

A day of grace has begun.

Today, may we diligently read, listen, and meditate on God’s Word, treating this moment as our last chance to break up the hardened soil of our hearts and plant seeds of righteousness. May we not rely on worldly thoughts but instead embrace the spiritual thoughts that only God’s Word can give—seeds of life and blessing planted in our hearts and lives.

I pray that today is a day where we sow seeds as true believers, and may the Lord’s blessings overflow to you.
