Zechariah 9:9
"Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."
Zechariah prophesies the coming of the Messiah, who would arrive as a King to the people of Israel. However, this King would come in humility, riding on a donkey, unlike the kings of the world.
The description of Him as a "righteous and victorious king" reveals the character and mission of Jesus. Jesus reigns with justice, and His rule is righteous. He not only rules justly but also brings salvation. While the people of Israel expected a political deliverer, Jesus came as the King of eternal salvation, delivering us from sin as the King of redemption.
The phrase "lowly and riding on a donkey" reflects the humility of Jesus. Earthly kings usually enter with grand processions, riding majestic horses after military victories. Yet, Jesus entered Jerusalem on a humble donkey, showing His gentle and servant-hearted nature. Jesus did not seek worldly power or wealth, but He came as one of lowly status to reach us.
This passage also gives us a reason for praise. The command "Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!" reminds us that Jesus’ coming is a source of joy and praise for all who belong to Zion. Jesus, our King, brings salvation and hope, filling us with true joy.
Today, as you read, listen, and meditate on God's Word, I pray that you would look forward with hope to the return of our Lord and Savior.
I bless you in the name of the Lord, and I bless you again!
Amen!
