The eternal life that the Bible testifies to is not merely about existing and living forever, as understood in many religions and worldly perspectives. This is because the Bible says that all people will live forever.
The real question is: Where will they live, with whom, and in what condition?
The eternal life that the Bible teaches—and the eternal life that God desires to give us—is not merely the continuation of life but the essence and state of that life.
Eternal life is the eternal life of God Himself, who is the source of life and life itself, the eternal, living God who has no beginning and no end. The Bible testifies that this eternal life is the living Word of God.
To give us eternal life, the eternal life Himself, the Word, took on human flesh and appeared on this earth. This Word is Jesus Christ, who is the embodiment of God's nature and eternal life. The Bible clearly reveals this truth.
The Apostle John records this truth under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit:
1 John 1:1-3
"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us."
1 John 5:20
"We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true—by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life."
At this moment, I hope that through the sealing of the Holy Spirit, this precious Word of life is deeply engraved in our hearts once again.
Eternal life—eternal salvation—is not simply about endless existence.
It is Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who is the eternal life and came to this world in human form to give us eternal life.
Therefore, anyone who believes in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and receives Him as Lord and Savior, has eternal life. But those without the Son have not received life.
The Apostle John, moved by God's inspiration, wrote the following:
1 John 5:11-13
"And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life."
Even before the Fall in the Garden of Eden, Adam did not possess eternal life.
While he did not break God's commandment, he was able to continue living in the Garden, but he did not have the eternal life that could never be lost or taken away.
Only after he sinned and confessed his sin did he receive the garment of salvation that symbolized Jesus Christ's redemptive work, and then, by God's grace, he was able to receive the blessing of eternal life.
Furthermore, eternal life is the gift of God that those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord possess today.
This gift, which the Lord has promised, is given not by works but by faith in Jesus Christ, as the Bible testifies:
1 John 2:25
"And this is what he promised us—eternal life."
John 6:47
"Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life."
Eternal life is something that has already been given to us and is something we possess, but it is also a future hope, as revealed in the Bible.
For those who have already received eternal life, it refers to the ultimate state of glory when they will be resurrected with a glorious body, like that of Jesus Christ, and when the image of Christ is fully formed within them—this is the ultimate state of believers being glorified.
A day of grace has begun.
Today, as you carefully read, listen to, and meditate on God's Word, may you remember that we, as born again Christians, are the children and chosen people of God's kingdom, and that we possess eternal life, a gift that no one can take away. May you live as one who has received eternal life, and live a life worthy of it, as a true believer.
In the name of the Lord, I bless and bless you.
Amen!
